The third edition of our Game Changers series features Norwich City F.C. from the UK, a progressive and pro-active club that has been leading the way in shaping and responding to new fan culture trends.
As fans become more engaged and socially conscious, clubs are increasingly stepping up to address pressing societal issues. Norwich City F.C. has been at the forefront of this movement, pioneering initiatives that promote inclusivity, mental health awareness, and digital engagement.
Today, we’re presenting our interview with Kieran Olds, Senior Partnerships Manager at Norwich City F.C. We discuss how the club is responding to these changes, the exciting new ventures they are exploring, and the trends that will shape the future of football fan culture.
What notable changes have you noticed in football fan culture over the past 5 years?
There’s a growing emphasis on the position of football clubs as a force for good, both in the local community and more broadly within society.
This isn’t necessarily new, but increasingly we see clubs and fan groups using their platforms to advocate for positive change, including in campaigns against racism, homophobia and discrimination.
Similarly, football fan culture is also playing an instrumental role in the heightened awareness and de-stigmatisation of mental health issues. You only need to look at the awareness the club’s recent work in this space has generated to see the significant impact fans can have as the driving force behind this positive messaging.

How has your club responded to these cultural shifts among football fans?
Both the club and our fans understand the role we have to play in effecting positive societal change. 'A Home for Everyone’ is Norwich City’s own campaign and umbrella brand that incorporates our commitment and work within the areas of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Mental Health.
A recent example of this in action has been the club’s work around World Mental Health Day 2023, which included a Samaritans shirt takeover and a social media lineups initiative which was adopted by clubs across the EFL Championship.
It culminated in the club publishing a video on the day itself titled 'You Are Not Alone' which went on to be viewed almost 150 million times, and was cited as the reason for over 7,000 individual inbound messages to Samaritans.

What potential benefits do you foresee from Norwich City joining Football at AlphaVerse and launching a dedicated Fanzone in the football metaverse?
The Football at AlphaVerse partnership opens up exciting new opportunities for fan engagement. Fans can benefit from visiting the Norwich Fanzone in the football metaverse by experiencing a unique, immersive environment that brings them closer to the club, regardless of their geographical location.
This platform allows us to connect with new fans while providing innovative ways for existing fans to interact with the club.

In your opinion, what are the key trends that will shape the future of football fan culture?
For me, technological advances in digital fan engagement will be pivotal in how football continues to evolve.
Sharing experiences, opinions and content is becoming increasingly accessible for both clubs and fans worldwide, crossing geographical barriers and opening up considerable opportunity on both sides.
Football at AlphaVerse is a great example of this, as it has the ability to connect clubs with new fans outside of their immediate locality whilst also providing a new way for existing fans to engage with their club.

How do you see the balance between in-person and digital fan engagement evolving?
How this trend evolves will have a huge influence on the way in which fans interact with clubs, players, one another and football in general. The challenge, however, lies in balancing the authenticity of in-person fan engagement with the accessibility and reach of digital avenues.
While digital platforms can greatly enhance fan engagement and connect a global audience, maintaining the traditional, personal connection that comes with attending matches and in-person events is crucial for preserving the authenticity and emotional bond fans have with their club.
Norwich City F.C. is not only keeping pace with the ever-evolving football fan culture but is also actively shaping it. From community initiatives and mental health awareness campaigns to their innovative ventures in the digital realm, the club continues to set a standard for fan engagement. We look forward to seeing Norwich City continue to inspire positive change in football.
